NUTRI-CHECK NET project partner Teagasc held a CNC Signpost Field Event and Crop Walk in Co. Wexford, hosted by arable farmer John Crowley. The event focused on soil management, fertiliser efficiency, and crop establishment, providing valuable insights for farmers.
Teagasc Arable Environmental Advisor and NEG member John Mahon discussed the use of organic manures on arable crops. He highlighted the role of the slurry hydrometer in determining nutrient content in different slurry types, helping farmers apply nutrients more precisely and efficiently.
Host farmer John Crowley shared his experience using a tool carrier on his tractor, allowing him to subsoil ahead of his disc harrow. This practice helps prepare a fine seedbed, which is critical for successful crop establishment. Teagasc Arable Specialist Shay Phelan provided an overview of establishment systems across various soil types.
The event also included a discussion on the pricing of different compound fertilisers, ensuring farmers get value for money. A demonstration of the SCS Spreadcheck analysis kit was conducted, showcasing how this tool assesses fertiliser quality, including density, granule size, and hardness. This innovative tool will be evaluated by CNC farmers in 2025 to enhance fertiliser application strategies.
The event provided practical knowledge and hands-on demonstrations, reinforcing best practices for soil and crop management.
