2025 UPDATE | WP3 – Evaluation of nutritional decision tools

In WP3, which focuses on engaging farmers in the Crop Nutrition Clubs, the period from September 2024 to the present has been dedicated to finalizing surveys that evaluate crop nutrition tools across the nine partner countries. A detailed schedule of activities has been established in collaboration with the CNC Facilitators, with monthly meetings held to assess progress and resolve any issues related to tool testing or data collection.

During this period, the CNC Facilitators have actively conducted face-to-face interviews with farmers. These interactions have been crucial in gathering valuable insights into the farmers’ thoughts, concerns, and experiences with the tested tools and technologies, and how these tools have supported their decision-making in crop nutrition.

The data collected is now supporting a comprehensive cost-benefit analysis (CBA) within WP3. This analysis will evaluate the financial, technical, and human-related costs of adopting and implementing crop nutrition decision tools against the benefits—such as increased crop yields, cost savings on fertilizers, and overall efficiency in decision-making. The CBA will help determine if the time and effort invested in using these tools yield a positive return on investment.

The tools under evaluation are designed to enhance nutrient management decision-making and are categorized into planning tools, check & adjusting tools, and reviewing tools. They are further classified by type—such as soil-based, plant-based, IT/computer-based, or precision management-based technologies and machinery—ensuring a broad approach to addressing the varied needs in crop nutrition management.
