Did you know that assessing soil health can be as simple as using a spade?
The Spade Test, an innovative method developed by ISARA, allows farmers to evaluate soil structure directly in the field.
By examining the top 25 cm of soil, this cost-effective test helps identify issues like heavy compaction that may require tilling. It categorizes soil clods into three types—Γ (gamma), Δ (delta), and Δb—offering insights into their structure, porosity, and biological activity. Additionally, the test evaluates soil macroporosity, which is crucial for water infiltration and root growth.
This hands-on approach not only aids in making informed decisions about soil management but also promotes sustainable farming practices, ensuring healthier crops and more resilient soil.
