NUTRI-CHECK NET Showcases Crop Nutrition Strategies at YEN Conference 2025

On January 21, 2025, the Yield Enhancement Network (YEN) Conference for Harvest 2024 was held at the KingsGate Conference Centre in Peterborough, UK, bringing together industry leaders to discuss advancements in crop nutrition. The conference focused on interactive discussions and insights, particularly in light of the year’s water-related challenges.

A dedicated NUTRI-CHECK NET session, chaired by Mark Tucker, Partnership and Value Chain Manager at Yara Europe, explored strategies for optimizing crop nutrition. Sarah Kendall (ADAS) presented the NUTRI-CHECK NET 3-Step Approach in her talk, ‘Measure to Manage: A 3-Step Approach to Crop Nutrient Management’, emphasizing the work done with Crop Nutrition Clubs across project partners.

The session also featured Torkild Birkmose (SEGES), who shared ‘A Danish Approach to Optimising Crop Nutrition in Arable Crops’. He later joined a panel discussion with farmer Andrew Williamson (Shropshire), agronomist Ian Holmes (Nottinghamshire), and National Expert Group member Daniel Kindred, where they tackled challenges in crop nutrition management, the importance of data collection, and the complexities of data integration and interpretation.

Renowned expert Roger Sylvester-Bradley presented findings from the YEN database (2013–2022), reinforcing the NUTRI-CHECK NET 3-Step Approach in Managing Nutrition for High-Yielding Crops. His data highlighted trends such as higher wheat yields being linked to increased nitrogen (N) and sulfur (SO₃) applications and more frequent nitrogen applications.

Additionally, Sarah Kendall showcased a NUTRI-CHECK NET poster, further disseminating the project’s key insights.

The event underscored the importance of data-driven decision-making in crop nutrition, solidifying NUTRI-CHECK NET’s role in advancing sustainable agricultural practices across Europe.
